We Are Dead Without Him {31 days 2017}

You know the routine don’t you?

Who’s On First

What’s on Second

I don’t know’s on Third.

It goes on further; all the way to short-stop.

Sometimes I think that’s the way we treat our salvation. We become so discombobulated in our thinking that we wrestle with ourselves. We question, “Am I saved? Maybe I’m not saved.” We do more. We try harder. But the truth is we can’t do anything that will save us. Not a thing!

Have you ever been to a funeral? Have you ever taken a gift to a dead man?

A dead man can’t open a gift. A dead man can’t even lift up his hands to receive a gift. There is nothing that a dead man can do but lie in the coffin.

That’s what we are without Christ. Dead. Without life, without breath, without a heartbeat. There is not one thing we can do to save ourselves.

We often get caught up in this merry go round; arguing with others about which comes first. It reminds me of the who’s on first routine.

Maybe it’s time to revise our perspective.

God allowed Lazarus to die so Jesus could show the world his glory. There was nothing Lazarus could do to raise himself. He lay in the tomb. Doing nothing.

The dead man in the coffin cannot make himself breath again. He can’t give himself life again. He can’t give himself mouth to mouth resuscitation can he? But somehow we think we can do something to save ourselves.

Today’s hymn is Revive us Again

Below are the original lyrics.

We praise Thee, O God!
For the Son of Thy love,
For Jesus Who died,
And is now gone above.

Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Revive us again.

We praise Thee, O God!
For Thy Spirit of light,
Who hath shown us our Savior,
And scattered our night.

All glory and praise
To the Lamb that was slain,
Who hath borne all our sins,
And hath cleansed every stain.

All glory and praise
To the God of all grace,
Who hast brought us, and sought us,
And guided our ways.

Revive us again;
Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled
With fire from above.
