Jesus Loves Us

I have been trying not to pick a song and write to it, but today’s word led me to the song first, then the story.

Today’s word is read.

Today’s hymn was Ivan’s favorite hymn.  Ivan was Shane’s grandad.  A wonderfully loving man who never spoke a cross word about anyone or to anyone that I ever saw.  He was never in the limelight but always in the background going about serving those he loved.  He’s been gone nearly 3 years and I still can’t sing Jesus Loves Me without tears.  It was his favorite hymn.

Such a simple hymn with simple words that we often dismiss as a children’s song when we read it.  But these words are the simple gospel message.  These words have the power to spur us to child like faith.  Isn’t that what we should be?  Like the little child that comes to his parent full of wonder and awe asking questions with amazement at the world around him.

Where is our child like faith?  Life weighs us down, but somehow Ivan never seemed weighed down by life around him.  He had not had an easy life.  He lived through the depression and losta son when Keith was in his late teen years.  He was Grandma’s sole caregiver until he went

TIME

to the hospital. He knew he wasn’t going home but even then he didn’t seem to have a care in the world.

I think this is another hymn I need to print and carry with me for a while.

Jesus Loves Me This I Know Hymn

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

Refrain

Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
As He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee,
Saying, “Let them come to Me.”

Refrain

Jesus loves me still today,
Walking with me on my way,
Wanting as a friend to give
Light and love to all who live.

Refrain

Jesus loves me! He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.

Refrain

Jesus loves me! He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
Thou hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for Thee.

Refrain

    I love songs like this that are simple but contain such wonderful truth. I know I overcomplicate things sometimes when it’s the simple truths like these that we really need to hold on to.

      I agree Lesley, so simple, yet so complex as we grow in our understanding of Scripture. I wish Grandpa Ivan would have shared how he did it with us!
